How to Update Your Skincare with Seasons

Where you live, what your skin type is, and the changing seasons can all play a role on your skin and what skincare you are using. It can be overwhelming to decide what you should be doing for your skin, and we are here to break that down for you!

Having a skincare regimen that you love and is effective can be life-changing! It is important to note that your regimen may not be effective all year long. With the changing seasons, we also need to keep in mind how our skincare may need to be altered.

Skin Types and Climates

We all have varying skin types ranging from dry, normal/dry, normal, normal/oily, or oily. Our skin type helps to determine what types of products we should be using. Some people may need a heavier moisturizer because they have dry skin and others may only need an SPF during the day because they are oilier.

Another factor is where you live; you may live in a more humid climate or in a drier climate. For example, I recently relocated from Colorado, a very dry climate, to Florida which is a very humid climate. My skincare routine has needed many alterations because I was using more moisturizing products in Colorado as my skin tended to be drier. Now in Florida my skin is normal and I am not using as many moisturizing products as before made my skin break out. I have now been using a hyaluronic acid serum in place of my moisturizer and toning twice a day instead of once and my skin is doing much better.

Keep in mind that even though I am a licensed esthetician, everyone’s skin is different. What works for me may not be just right for you. Consult with a licensed esthetician to learn more about your skin and what skincare would best suit you for your skin type and your climate. Just as a climate can determine your skincare, we must also be aware of how our climate changes throughout the seasons.

Winter Skincare

You will most likely need a bit more moisture and hydration during the winter months and could afford to use a heavier moisturizer. You can also add a hyaluronic acid serum to your moisturizer to provide that extra hydration. If you have dry skin, during the winter you may want to be using a gentle cleanser instead of an active one. Be sure that your cleanser is not stripping your skin; stay away from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).

Another thing you can do during winter months as long as you are staying out of the sun is to focus on exfoliation and anti-aging products and treatments. For example, you may want to add retinol to your routine after those sunny summer months; winter is a great time to focus on any brown spots or signs of aging.  Another thing you can do is start a series of peels with a licensed esthetician. When staying indoors more during the winter, it is a perfect time to tackle those skincare goals of yours!

Summer Skincare

In the summer, you will want to keep these deeper exfoliation treatments and products to a minimum and focus on sun protection. It’s not that the sun is any stronger in the summer, but it is when we are usually spending more time exposed to the sun’s rays. Please still wear your SPF on a daily basis in the winter, just be extra diligent during the summer months! This means reapplying your SPF every hour while spending your summer days outdoors.

Note that with warmer weather, you will most likely be sweating more and will need adequate hydration. Drink plenty of water and consider replacing your moisturizer with a hyaluronic acid serum to provide hydration instead of moisture if you feel you are leaning oilier.

Remember moisture equals oil in the skin, whereas hydration equals water in the skin.

Our skin can be moisturized yet dehydrated and vice versa. Lastly, if you feel your skin can handle more in the summer you can try using an active cleanser. Lactic acid is great for evening skin tone, just be sure to layer and reapply that sunblock!

I know finding a skincare routine may feel like an overwhelming task, and then on top of that altering it with the seasons can feel even more so. This is again why I recommend working with a Pomp licensed esthetician. We can help you eliminate the guesswork of choosing skincare by analyzing your skin and asking the right questions we can discover the best products for you and your skin no matter the time of year!
